A concussion can impact every part of your life—from your thoughts and emotions to your physical abilities. The best evidence for concussion management supports the use of a multifaceted baseline screening prior to each sport season for youth athletes and every two years for adults. A baseline test is a measurement and description of a person’s pre-injury functional brain performance and health, including cognitive, physical, sleep, and emotional functioning.
The purpose of a baseline test is not to diagnose a concussion (i.e. treatment), but rather to identify and measure changes after an injury that indicate an individual is ready or not ready to safely return to play. A baseline test also provides valuable information to healthcare providers such as physical therapists and athletic trainers, who work with individuals after a concussion on improving their symptoms.
Brain Base (formally known as Watershed Jackson) believes in a multifaceted baseline screening process, utilizing several different tests instead of relying upon just one. Brain Base’s approach to screening engages in the measurement of visual function, cognitive processing, balance, and memory.
Screenings will be offered free of charge, but registration is required. You do not need a Teton County Library card to obtain a screening.
