The Fight to Tax the Rich and Why it Matters for Our Democracy

Jesse Eisinger traces the unlikely history of the income tax, to the 150-year fight the wealthy have waged against taxes in this country, bringing us to the rise of modern-day superrich tax avoidance. He navigates the new efforts from Warren, Sanders, Wyden and Biden to offer some form of Wealth Tax, and its opposition, in anticipation of the Supreme Court case, Moore v The United States, that could make a Wealth Tax against billionaires unconstitutional.

Jesse Eisinger is a senior editor and reporter at ProPublica. He is the author of the “The Chickenshit Club: Why the Justice Department Fails to Prosecute Executives.” In April 2011, he and a colleague won the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting for a series of stories on questionable Wall Street practices that helped make the financial crisis the worst since the Great Depression.
