Event Details

JHHS Junior Linden Hansen teaches elementary and middle school-aged kids about news and media literacy. She covers aspects of navigating online news over  two sessions planned with Common Sense Education curriculum. “Reading News Online” will be taught on Tuesday, May 23. “Finding Credible News” will be taught on Thursday, May 25. The lessons include slideshows, videos, and handout activities.

The “Reading News Online” lesson will aim to teach children to understand the different parts of a news page, identify the structure of a news article, and learn about sponsored content and advertisements.

The “Finding Credible News” lesson will cover learning why people put misleading information on the internet, differentiating fake news from credible news, and practicing evaluating the credibility of information.

Snacks will be provided.

Participation in activities is free and optional for kids who spend after school hours at the library. Kids may also opt to read, work on homework, check out a laptop for up to two hours, or use our public computers. Though the Youth Wing is fully staffed, children in the Youth Wing are not formally supervised outside of the Youth Auditorium activities. Please consider whether your child is mature enough to handle being unsupervised in a public space before sending them to the library after school.
